Multiple people were wounded in what is being described as a vehicular terror attack in Israel on Tuesday, July 4. A 23-year-old Palestinian man on Pinchas Rosen Street in Tel Aviv, drove his vehicle onto the sidewalk to strike bystanders. The assailant then exited the vehicle and brandished a knife, stabbing the victims, according to police. 

"We understand that he was alone, and we have no doubt that this was an attack," said Tel Aviv Police District Commander Ami Eshed. "[Police] are taking action to find out if the assailant was accompanied by anyone else. This is a difficult event but currently, the situation is stable," the officer added. 

Officials identified the assailant as Abed Khalila, reportedly from the Palestinian village of As-Samu, near Hebron, according to Israel's Shin Bet security services. He was reportedly shot and killed by a civilian bystander at the scene of the attack. Footage shared on social media showed the assailant dead at the scene.

Nine individuals suffered injuries, including one 46-year-old woman who was evacuated to a nearby hospital with severe stab wounds, according to British media. 

Three injured individuals, aged 30, 66, and 76, are currently being treated for multiple injuries from the attack at Beilinson Hospital. Five injured individuals have arrived at Ichilov's trauma center and an injured woman in her 70s was referred to the emergency department of the Meir Medical Center in minor condition.

The IDF on Sunday night, July 2, launched its largest operation in Jenin since the Second Intifada with a series of more than ten airstrikes and moving brigade-level forces into the northern West Bank Palestinian city. 

The IDF Chief Spokesperson Brig.-Gen. Daniel Hagari refused to set a timeline for the operation, but the impression was that it would last a minimum of several days, and could easily last weeks or longer, but would not be open-ended and would not lead to the IDF trying to permanently hold territory in any way.

During the operation, soldiers located and confiscated an improvised rocket launcher and other weapons. Most notably, they destroyed several laboratories for the production and storage of explosives, according to an IDF statement. 

One of the larger laboratories had hundreds of improvised explosives ready for use and another one had dozens of such explosives also ready for use. 

Overall, over 300 Palestinian improvised explosives were seized and a couple dozen key terror command and control and other targets were destroyed.  (JPost / VFI News)

Four Palestinians broke into Joseph's tomb late Monday night, July 3, and vandalized it which caused damage to the site, according to Israeli media. 

Samaria Regional Council head Yossi Dagan said, "Only the State of Israel can safeguard Joseph's Tomb. Neglecting the tomb has been a failure that needs to be corrected." 

A news group focusing on Palestinian affairs, tweeted footage of the vandalism. In the tweet, they wrote "video| Young men destroy Joseph's grave, east of Nablus, in response to the occupation's crimes in Jenin." (JPost /VFI News)

Iran has hanged at least 354 people in the first six months of 2023, a rights group said Monday, July 3, adding that the pace of executions was much higher than in 2022. 

Rights groups have accused Tehran of increasing the use of the death penalty to spread fear across society in the wake of the protest movement that erupted last September over the death of Mahsa Amini, who had been arrested for allegedly violating strict dress rules for women. 

Norway-based Iran Human Rights said the 354 people figure for the first six months up to June 30 was up 36 percent on the same period in 2022, when 261 people were executed. 

Emphasizing concerns that non-Persian ethnic groups are disproportionately affected by executions in Iran, it said 20 percent of all executions were of members of the Sunni Baluch minority. It said 206 people were executed for drug-related charges, a 126 percent rise compared to the same period last year. 

IHR director Mahmood Amiry-Moghaddam said, “The majority of those killed are low-cost victims of the killing machine, drug defendants who are from the most marginalized communities.” 

IHR earlier this year reported that Iran carried out 582 executions in 2022, the highest figure in the Islamic Republic since 2015. Iran is the world’s second-biggest executioner after China for which no data is available, according to Amnesty International. (TOI / VFI News)

Mohammad Raad, head of the Loyalty to the Resistance Bloc (Hezbollah's political wing), announced Saturday, July 1, that Hezbollah would not be removing two tents placed on the Israeli side of the Blue Line, according to Lebanese media. 

For the past two months, Hezbollah fighters have been manning two tents placed on the Israeli side of the Blue Line, the ceasefire line and border with Lebanon, established after the Israeli withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000. 

The specific area in question is called Mount Dov in Israel, for the IDF officer killed there in 1970, and called Shaba farms in Lebanon. It is actually an Israeli enclave with several IDF outposts. The area is on constant alert and the army operates in the area regularly in order to thwart attempts to penetrate into Israeli territory.

The Israeli government had preferred that the dispute be handled diplomatically by the UN  in order to avoid escalation in the northern sector, so it had asked the UN to apply pressure on Lebanon and also Hezbollah to remove the tents. 

The IDF also stated that the tents were not a threat to national security. According to the request, "Unless Hezbollah evacuates the two sites, the Israeli army will itself take the initiative to evacuate them by force, after two weeks of mediation by European capitals in contact with Hezbollah in Lebanon." Following a meeting that was held in Jerusalem on Tuesday, July 4, between Foreign Minister Eli Cohen and his Liberian counterpart, as well as with the President of Liberia, it was announced that Liberia intends to open an embassy in Israel. 

Foreign Minister Cohen said, "I welcome Liberia's intention to open an embassy in Israel, which will deepen the ties of friendship between the countries. Liberia is one of Israel's great friends on the African continent." 

"I thanked the President of Liberia, George Weah, for his country’s support for Israel in the international institutions and we agreed that we will work together to deepen economic cooperation in the fields of energy, agriculture, and water, using Israeli knowledge and experience and promoting commercial delegations in Israel and Liberia."

Israel is advancing plans for the construction of an underwater electricity cable project to meet growing energy needs in the center and north of the country and to link the country’s electricity network to power grids in Europe and countries in the Gulf region. 

The national planning and building council on Tuesday, July 4, decided to commence with the planning and construction of the proposed 150-kilometer (93-mile) subsea electricity cable that will run along Israel’s Mediterranean coast from Ashkelon in the south to Haifa in the north, the Energy Ministry said in a statement. 

The underwater power cable will transmit electricity mainly generated from renewable solar energy fields in Israel’s south to areas of demand in cities in the center and the north. 

According to the subsea cable project plan, the possibility of connecting Israel’s electricity network to power grids in Europe via Cyprus and Greece will be advanced, as well as the option of connecting to Gulf countries through Jordan and Egypt, the ministry said. 

Connecting the underwater cable to regional countries such as Egypt would open the possibility to have a backup for the local grid in case of power shortages and allow for exports of green electricity produced in Israel, the ministry said. (TOI / VFI News)

Tel Aviv University was ranked first in Israel in the prestigious QS World University Ranking, TAU announced on Sunday, July 2. Tel Aviv University is the largest university in the country with over 30,000 students. 

According to QS, the results draw on the analysis of 17.5m academic papers and the expert opinions of over 240,000 academic faculty and employers. 

For the 2024 ranking, QS introduced three new metrics: Sustainability, Employment Outcomes, and International Research Network. TAU is ranked at 215th place, the first among Israeli schools. 

The Hebrew University of Jerusalem, the second in the country after TAU, is ranked at the 251st spot. 

TAU climbed several dozen positions in the 2024 ranking. In 2023, it was in the 260th place. The top three universities in the world ranking are MIT, Cambridge, and Oxford. (JPost / VFI News)
