Despite War on Multiple Fronts, Israel Ranks 8th in World Happiness Report for Second Year Running

Israel placed 8th in the 2026 World Happiness Report, published Thursday, March 19, holding its position from the previous year despite another year of war, national trauma, and prolonged uncertainty. Finland topped the rankings for the ninth straight year, while the United States placed 23rd, the United Kingdom 29th, and France 35th. Happiness researcher Anat Fanti of Bar-Ilan University said the result reflects a deeply rooted collective sense of meaning and purpose among Israelis that sustains overall life satisfaction even under fire, and that Israel’s ranking has risen consistently since 2021.

The survey’s most striking finding was the performance of Israel’s youngest generation: Israelis under the age of 25 ranked third globally in their age group, making them among the happiest young people in the world while living under active conflict. This stands in sharp contrast to the United States, where young people’s happiness has fallen to 60th place globally. Other Israeli age cohorts placed approximately 11th worldwide. Fanti said young Israelis appear far more grounded than their peers in other Western nations.

Fanti cautioned that the rankings must not obscure the genuine psychological cost of war, pointing to rising worry, sadness, and anger, as well as eroding institutional trust — with Israel falling to 107th place in the perception-of-corruption indicator. “We cannot take for granted the population’s resilience in the face of such difficult years,” she said, urging active investment in mental health services and the social bonds that allow Israeli society to endure. “The 2026 report shows that Israeli society is still very strong.”
