Co-Pilot Stabs Captain and Sends a Flight Carrying 174 to Israel into a Dive before Passengers Storm the Cockpit; Major Outlets Call It a ‘Brawl’

Social media erupted after some of the world’s leading media outlets initially described the dramatic incident aboard a Flydubai flight to Israel on Wednesday, September 30, as a “brawl” or an “altercation between pilots” — wording critics said failed to convey the potentially catastrophic nature of what happened. The seriousness of the incident became increasingly clear as more details emerged. The flight from Dubai to Tel Aviv was carrying 174 people when the co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain, and the aircraft went into a steep descent, plunging nearly 14,000 feet in just 30 seconds.

Passengers and crew members forced their way into the cockpit and subdued the co-pilot, allowing the aircraft to be stabilized and diverted to Tabuk, Saudi Arabia. The co-pilot appeared to be attempting to crash the plane, and passengers intervened as the aircraft descended sharply, while Israeli authorities scrambled fighter jets amid fears of a hijacking. Yet some international coverage initially reduced the extraordinary sequence of events to a fight between two pilots.

The BBC first described the incident as a “physical altercation between the pilots” before later reports incorporated the stabbing, the passengers’ intervention, and the apparent attempt to bring down the aircraft; one of its presenters also referred on air to Ben Gurion Airport as “Ben Gvir Airport.” The New York Times drew criticism for describing the diversion as occurring “after a confrontation between the pilot and co-pilot,” and The Guardian referred to an “apparent brawl” while noting that Israeli officials were investigating whether the incident constituted an attempted terror attack. The Guardian defended its approach, writing on X that its headlines and live coverage included the facts it could verify as they were confirmed, and its coverage was subsequently updated as additional details emerged. “Dear Lord, we pray in Yeshua’s Name that You receive our thanks for the rescue of every soul aboard that flight to Tel Aviv. We thank You for the courage You placed in the passengers and crew who stormed the cockpit and for the steady hands that brought the aircraft back under control. We ask that You heal the wounded captain and calm the hearts of all who lived through those terrifying minutes. Please expose the truth behind this attack and guard every flight that carries Your people home.”
