Spain Withdraws Ambassador from Israel, Furthering Diplomatic Rift
The Spanish government officially withdrew its ambassador to Israel, as announced in Spain’s official government journal on Wednesday, March 11, 2026. The decree to dismiss Ana María Salomón Pérez from her ambassadorial post was made by the Council of Ministers on Tuesday, March 10, and signed by King Felipe VI and Foreign Minister José Manuel Albares.
Pérez had already been recalled from Tel Aviv on September 9, 2025, for consultations, hours after Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar accused the Spanish government of antisemitism over its measures against Israel-bound ships and aircraft during the war in Gaza. She never returned, and the embassy has since been led by a chargé d’affaires. The dismissal is considered politically and symbolically motivated rather than a reflection of her professional performance.
In May 2024, Prime Minister Netanyahu recalled Israel’s ambassadors to Ireland, Spain, and Norway in protest over those countries’ unilateral recognition of a Palestinian state. Both Israel’s embassy in Spain and Spain’s embassy in Israel will now be led by chargés d’affaires. Spain’s Foreign Minister stated that the Spanish embassy in Israel will remain open to assist with evacuation operations for Spanish citizens in the region.

“Lord God, we pray for the nations that have turned against Israel and severed their diplomatic ties. We ask in Yeshua’s Name that You soften the hearts of leaders in Spain and throughout Europe, and remind them of Your covenant with the people of Israel. We pray that You open the eyes of those who have been deceived by false narratives and replace hostility with understanding. We ask that You raise up righteous voices in every nation that will stand with Israel and speak the truth. Bless those who bless Israel, and may Your will be done among the nations of the earth.”
