Turkish Interior Minister Prays for Control Over ‘Liberated’ Jerusalem
Turkey’s Interior Minister, Mustafa Ciftci, said he had prayed, “O Lord, grant me the governorship of Jerusalem,” during his years as governor of Corum and Erzurum, recounting the appeal at an AK Party provincial council meeting in Corum on Saturday, June 6.
Pointing to the fall of the Assad regime, Ciftci said he hoped to see Jerusalem “liberated” in the same manner as Damascus, and that one day “those lands will be ours once again.” He credited Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, declaring, “God willing, they will come under our sovereignty and dominion once more. Because we have a global leader like Recep Tayyip Erdogan at our helm. A world leader.”
The Assad regime in Syria collapsed in December 2024 after former Islamist insurgent Ahmed al-Sharaa seized control, and the country has since been gripped by sectarian violence, even as Western governments moved to embrace Sharaa and lift sanctions on Damascus. The Ottoman Empire ruled the land of Israel for more than four centuries before its defeat by the Allied powers in World War I, signing the Armistice of Mudros and surrendering to Britain in 1918.
