Ted Cruz Slams Iran Deal: ‘Not a Good Idea to Give Millions to Lunatics’
Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz issued a blistering warning on Wednesday, June 17, over what he described as sweeping American concessions embedded in the US-Iran memorandum of understanding. Cruz charged that President Donald Trump is being steered by deeply flawed advice as the framework takes shape.
“History teaches that giving billions of dollars to theocratic lunatics who want to murder us is not a good idea. I think the president is receiving some very poor advice on this deal,” Cruz said. His objections sharpened after the White House released the full text of the provisional framework, which clears the way for lifting restrictions on Iranian petroleum exports and grants Tehran access to a $300 billion post-war reconstruction fund.
Cruz was far from the only Republican to launch a fierce broadside against the administration’s diplomatic maneuvers. Senator Bill Cassidy of Louisiana branded the proposed treaty the “worst foreign policy blunder in decades,” warning that the agreement leaves Tehran emboldened rather than constrained. Taking to social media to lambast the framework, Cassidy wrote, “Reagan is rolling over in his grave. Iran’s nuclear ambitions were not curbed, and they have learned that threatening the Strait of Hormuz works and will undoubtedly leverage it in the future. Now, Iran gets to build brand-new infrastructure under this deal.”

Sovereign Lord, we lift up the leaders of the United States and of every nation weighing this agreement with Iran. We ask You to grant them discernment, courage, and a heart for what is right, and to surround them with wise and honest counsel. We pray that no plan formed to empower those who seek Israel’s destruction would prosper, and that You would frustrate the schemes of the wicked. Guard Israel and her allies, O Lord, and let truth and righteousness prevail in the councils of the nations. In Yeshua’s Name we pray.
