US President Donald Trump declared on Wednesday, May 27, that he remains dissatisfied with the current state of the peace talks aimed at ending the war with Iran, signaling that Washington’s patience has limits. Speaking during a Cabinet meeting at the White House, Trump said Tehran is eager for an agreement but has not yet met America’s terms. “They want very much to make a deal. So far, they haven’t gotten there,” he said. “We’re not satisfied with it, but we will be. We will be either that, or we’ll have to just finish the job.”

Trump suggested the Iranian regime had miscalculated by trying to use the upcoming November midterm elections as leverage, wrongly assuming his administration would soften to avoid political fallout. “I don’t care about the midterms,” he asserted, adding bluntly that “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon.” Though he voiced frustration, he noted the discussions were technically progressing well and that the regime was “starting to give us the things that they have to give us.” He paired the assessment with a stark warning of military action should compliance stall, gesturing to Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth and stating that “the man on my left is going to finish them off.”

US President Donald Trump told a Cabinet meeting on Wednesday, May 27, that the United States would strike Oman if it interfered in the Strait of Hormuz, the vital waterway through which much of the world’s oil passes. “Oman will behave like everybody else, or we’ll have to blow them up,” Trump said. “They understand that.” The blunt warning underscored Washington’s determination to keep the strategic channel open as negotiations with Iran continue.

Trump said that Iran badly wants an agreement but that the United States is not yet satisfied with the terms on the table. “Iran is very much intent; they want very much to make a deal. So far, they haven’t gotten there,” he said, warning that the alternative was to “just finish the job.” He stressed that the Strait of Hormuz would remain open to all and would not be controlled by any single country under any deal reached with Tehran. “We’ll watch over it, but nobody’s going to control it,” he said.

Trump further emphasized that he does not want China or Russia to take possession of Iran’s stockpile of enriched uranium, and he reiterated that the United States was not discussing any easing of sanctions on the regime. He insisted that any agreement must be “perfect” and that the strait would reopen immediately under its framework. Speaking with Israelis is treated as a criminal offense in Iran, and the regime has routinely accused dissidents of ties to Israel’s Mossad to justify its campaign of executions. After masses of protesters were killed in January and thousands more were arrested or disappeared, those who reached out did so on condition of anonymity.

One older professional, identified only as Z., described the “great deal of hope” Iranians placed in Washington and Jerusalem after the American president promised in January that help was on its way. While the regime has acknowledged fewer than 4,000 deaths and blamed foreign-backed rioters, human rights groups estimate the true toll at closer to 30,000, obscured by internet shutdowns and mass disappearances. Z. wrote that the people of Iran are in a very bad psychological state and have little hope for the future, noting that little had improved since Mojtaba Khamenei succeeded his father, Ali Khamenei, who was assassinated in February.

The Iranians warned that a deal granting the regime billions in frozen assets, sanctions relief, and the freedom to sell oil would crush any remaining hope of change. “If an agreement is reached, people will completely lose hope for changing the regime,” Z. wrote, adding that most people he knew were hoping the war would resume. He placed his trust not in internal reform but in continued pressure and force from abroad, viewing the United States and Israel as forces of liberation for a nation desperate to be free.

Relations between Israel and the Czech Republic are exceptionally strong and have been for decades, Czech Ambassador to Israel Veronika Kuchynova Smigolova affirmed on Wednesday, May 27. She emphasized that Prague’s pro-Israel posture has held firm across changes of government, including the transition that followed elections in October 2025. “One specific feature of the Czech Republic is that support for Israel exists across the political spectrum,” she said. “So we had a pro-Israel government, and now we have another pro-Israel government.”

The ambassador described Prague’s role as a crucial blocker of anti-Israel measures within the European Union, a role that has grown more important since the loss of Hungary’s automatic veto under Viktor Orban. She affirmed that the Czech foreign minister had promised Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar that Prague would not support sanctions or punitive resolutions, which typically require unanimity to pass. She singled out efforts in Brussels to suspend the EU-Israel Association Agreement and the Horizon research cooperation, vowing that “as much as it is within our power, we will block any attempts to stop or suspend it.”

Smigolova offered a markedly different approach from Western capitals that have begun publicly setting “red lines” for Israel. “I don’t think that friends speak about red lines when they talk about each other,” she explained, noting that disagreements between true friends belong in private rather than in the media. Hundreds of New Yorkers packed into a kosher bagel shop in the Jamaica Estates neighborhood of Queens on Thursday, May 28, transforming an act of antisemitic vandalism into a powerful show of community solidarity. The crowd gathered at Bagels & Co., an Israeli-owned eatery, days after a vandal rampaged outside the storefront. Supporters streamed in and out throughout the afternoon, many stopping to embrace the owner and pose with Israeli flags.

The “foodies united” rally was organized by Daniel Rosen, who founded the nonprofit Impact after the October 7 atrocities, together with Young Israel of Jamaica Estates, Young Israel of Holliswood, Chazaq, and other local groups. “This Islamist tried to hurt this business, and our response as a community is to help this business,” Rosen said. “We want to send a message. This shall not stand. You cannot come into our neighborhood, do terrible things, and then expect us not to have an organized response.” Owner Hila Ashkenazi noted that it was not the first incident at the shop.

The attack itself unfolded in the early hours of Friday, May 22, when a suspect dressed in traditional Muslim garb spent nearly five minutes hurling potted plants, chairs, and tables at the building, causing roughly $800 in damage and shattering eight flower pots before slipping away. No one was injured, and police are investigating the rampage as a possible hate crime. Rabbi Dov Lerner of Young Israel of Jamaica Estates said the turnout revealed the strength of the local community, while Impact CEO Aaron Herman said the gathering was meant to turn fear into action.

An international friendly between Ireland and Qatar was stopped twice on Thursday, May 28, when fans hurled tennis balls onto the pitch at Aviva Stadium in Dublin to protest Ireland’s upcoming Nations League fixtures against Israel. The balls came raining down from spectators in the upper West, East, and South sections of the stands, accompanied by chants of “stop the game” and “free Palestine.” Play was paused while stewards and security cleared the field of the debris.

A coalition of League of Ireland fans claimed responsibility, releasing a statement that they intended to deliver a strong message to the Football Association of Ireland and the Irish government. “The Nations League fixtures between Ireland and Israel must be cancelled,” the statement read. Ireland captain Seamus Coleman was seen reacting with frustration as the tennis balls littered the grass during the disruption.

Ireland is scheduled to face Israel on September 27, at a neutral venue, followed by a home match in Dublin on October 4. The disruption was not the first flashpoint of the month surrounding Israel in international football. A renewed wave of fascination with Noah’s Ark has emerged after researchers pointed to a 16th-century world map that appears to depict the biblical vessel resting in the mountains of eastern Turkey. The 1587 map, known as the Planisphere and crafted by Italian cartographer Urbano Monte, is now housed at Stanford University’s David Rumsey Map Center. Investigators studying the illustration believe it may correspond with the Durupinar formation near Mount Ararat, a boat-shaped geological site long tied to theories about the ark.

Monte’s Planisphere is among the largest known early world maps, composed of 60 hand-drawn sheets that together form a circular image nearly 10 feet wide. The map places a depiction of Noah’s Ark in the very region where modern researchers continue their search, drawing the attention of independent investigators who noted the striking resemblance to the present-day Durupinar site. First identified in 1959, the formation has remained at the center of debate for decades because of its unusual ship-like shape and dimensions.

In recent years, researchers associated with the Noah’s Ark Scans project have conducted ground-penetrating radar scans and soil analyses at the site, reporting underground voids, corridor-like formations, and a central cavity beneath the surface. They also documented elevated levels of organic matter and potassium in soil samples, along with marine fossils and shell-like materials that have fueled speculation about catastrophic flooding in the area. The work calls to mind Genesis 8:4, which records that the ark came to rest upon the mountains of Ararat after the floodwaters receded.

Elon Musk, the owner of Tesla and SpaceX and the world’s wealthiest person, lauded Israeli innovation as “number one” on the planet during a live virtual appearance at the Samson International Smart Mobility Summit in Tel Aviv on Monday, May 18. The billionaire entrepreneur had been invited to address a gathering of Israel’s high-tech community. Asked whether he had a message for Israeli innovators, Musk responded with unreserved admiration for the country’s outsized contributions to technology.

“I’m a huge admirer of the innovation coming out of Israel. I think it is objectively true that Israel punches high above its weight for population,” Musk said. He went on to single out the nation’s remarkable output relative to its small size. “My hat is off to Israel for just how much incredible innovation. I’d say innovation per capita, Israel must be number one by far in the world.”

Musk had originally been slated to attend the summit in person as its guest of honor, but the event was postponed from March and moved to a virtual format following the war with Iran. His praise added a high-profile endorsement to Israel’s reputation as the “Startup Nation.” That sector remains one of the principal engines of the country’s economy and exports, even amid a turbulent year.
