The Simon Wiesenthal Center (SWC) on Friday, July 7, decried United Nations (UN) Secretary-General António Guterres’ assertion that Israel deployed “excessive force” to root out the terrorist infrastructure in Jenin.

“Excessive force? Really? What would Portugal or Belgium or UK do? All 12 Palestinians killed in Jenin were armed terrorists. IEDs hidden under [a] mosque. Jews in neighboring communities shot, rammed, and stabbed to death,” declared Rabbi Abraham Cooper, Associate Dean and Director of Global Social Action at the SWC.

“There‘s a role for Secretary-General, UNWRA, UNHCRC, UNICEF: Stop the double standard; stop demonizing Israel; stop giving a moral blank check to Palestinians to kill Jews; stop PA pay to slay Jews; stop weaponizing Palestinian youth, stop the brainwashing of Palestinian children; make UNWRA schools acknowledge the legitimacy of their Israeli neighbors.”

“Stop rewarding terrorism and start investing in real peace and reconciliation because right now there is no viable Palestinian partner for negotiations that could lead to a peaceful two-state solution,” Rabbi Cooper added.

Earlier that week, Guterres told reporters during a press briefing at UN Headquarters in New York City that, “There was an excessive force used by Israeli forces.” Israel has “legitimate concerns over its security … but escalation is not the answer.”

IDF soldiers on Monday, July 10, shot and killed a Palestinian who attacked them with gunfire and possessed a grenade, near the Neveh Tzuf settlement in Judea and Samaria, the IDF spokesperson's office has confirmed.

No IDF soldiers were injured, according to local Israeli municipal reports and the IDF.

Initially, the man was parked by the roadside and was acting in a way that raised the IDF patrol's suspicions. When they approached him to ask him to identify himself, he opened fire and started to get ready to throw the grenade at them, but he was shot before he was able to let it loose.

After the exchange of fire, a Carlo submachine gun was found in the Palestinian's car.

The European parties to the Iran nuclear deal do not plan to invoke snapback sanctions on Tehran ahead of the expiration of a ban on Iranian ballistic missiles and drone exports set to expire in October, a foreign diplomatic source said on Wednesday, July 5.

The E3 – UK, France, and Germany – plan to institute their own sanctions related to Iranian ballistic missiles “and other coercive measures” beyond the UN sanctions expiration date on October 18, the source stated. The countries do not plan to add new sanctions or to activate the snapback mechanism, a veto-proof move that would reinstate all UN sanctions on Iran that were in place before the Iran nuclear deal was reached in 2015.

Israel has secured €1 billion ($1.1 billion) in financing from UK banking giant HSBC and Israel’s Bank Leumi to start building an overground light rail line in the greater Tel Aviv area.

HSBC and Bank Leumi will provide the consortium – made of Israel’s Shapir Group and Spain’s CAF (Spain) – that has won the tender for planning, designing and building the purple light rail line, with €1 billion in financing, according to a joint statement by the Finance Ministry and the Transportation Ministry.

With the final closure of the financing on Tuesday, July 4, the Shapir-CAF consortium will be able to start working on the construction of the light rail infrastructure and technological systems and order the tram cars, after winning the tender for the project about a year ago.

The planned Tel Aviv purple light rail line will run from the eastern part of the Tel Aviv metropolitan area to transport passengers from Yehud, Kiryat Ono, via Ramat Gan and Givatayim to the center of Tel Aviv, stopping at Bar Ilan University, Sheba Medical Center, and Shuk Hacarmel.

It will span 29 kilometers (18 miles) and stop at 46 stations at a frequency of four minutes carrying about 256,000 passengers a day.

The government hailed the closure of the financing as a “vote of confidence” in the Israeli economy.
