The Israel Defense Forces on Sunday morning, September 6, carried out a snap drill testing how the military’s top-level headquarters would function in a sudden multifront scenario. Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir launched the exercise, which examined the alertness and readiness of the General Staff headquarters, the readiness of standby forces, and the ability to handle a sudden, complex, multifront, and large-scale event.

The drill was built to sharpen the military’s preparations for the upcoming Jewish holiday period while testing how thoroughly the lessons of the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led onslaught and the war that followed have been absorbed. Most members of the General Staff, including the commanders of the military’s regional commands, directorates, and wings, were kept unaware that the exercise was coming. The head of the Operations Directorate was the main exception.

Once the drill began, top officers were ordered to rush to their headquarters and take charge of an erupting crisis. Iran is preparing for a broad, coordinated attack against Israel on several fronts at once, Israeli assessments indicate, in a scenario resembling a future October 7-style assault but designed from the outset to bring together every component of the Iranian axis. Tehran is seeking to combine its own forces with Hezbollah in Lebanon, Hamas, the Houthis in Yemen, and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq in a single campaign.

On October 7, 2023, Hamas launched its attack without the other fronts opening simultaneously and under full coordination. The idea of a broad regional war against Israel had surfaced even earlier. Internal Hamas documents seized in the Gaza Strip after the attack showed that Yahya Sinwar had sought to expand the confrontation and draw additional arenas into it. One planning document stressed the need to “connect and prepare the external fronts,” namely Lebanon, Syria, and Sinai, and to agree in advance on communications mechanisms for both routine periods and wartime.

What became clear after the war was that this ambition was never matched by full coordination ahead of the attack. Published US and Israeli assessments found that Iran and Hezbollah had not been informed in advance of all the details of the October 7 plan or the precise date on which it would be carried out. The council clarified that the document is an updated summary of global intelligence and terrorism trends, not a set of new travel warnings. The escalation and Israel’s ongoing campaign against Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah, and other actors have led to increased efforts to target Israelis beyond the country’s borders, and growing incitement on social media has widened the motivation to attack. Hezbollah, seeking to avenge the blows dealt to its leadership, poses a significant potential threat. In Europe and elsewhere, Hamas is investing considerable resources in building terrorist infrastructure for high-profile and revenge attacks on Jewish and Israeli targets, alongside its efforts in Judea and Samaria and Gaza, while global jihadist organizations such as ISIS and Al-Qaeda continue to issue direct calls for attacks against Jews.

The council also points to a sharp rise in attacks by lone perpetrators. Since the outbreak of the war, 25 Israelis and Jews have been murdered in terrorist attacks abroad. This is a decentralized and hard-to-predict threat fueled by radicalization on social media, with attackers generally acting on their own initiative and choosing accessible soft targets such as large gatherings, houses of worship, and community institutions. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee on Saturday, September 5, accused the British government of having “lost it,” after Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband published a video repeating allegations that Israel is blocking the entry of medication into the Gaza Strip. Israel’s Foreign Ministry responded as well, flatly denying that it is preventing Palestinians from accessing medical treatment. In the video, published on Friday, September 4, Miliband described a meeting on the healthcare situation in Gaza at which he said he was told of medicines being blocked and of children dying while waiting for treatment.

“The Brits have lost it,” Huckabee wrote on X in response. “The Jew hate of their government knows no boundaries and knows no facts.” The Foreign Ministry insisted that Miliband was well aware of the facts. “If the Foreign Secretary were interested in facts rather than stories, he would know that there are no restrictions whatsoever on the entry of medicines into the Gaza Strip, and that no medicines are being blocked,” the ministry wrote on X.

The ministry noted that 22,500 tons of medical supplies have entered Gaza since the ceasefire began in October 2025, and that in the two weeks before the exchange alone, 200 Palestinians exited the enclave for medical treatment. It added that the United Kingdom is itself a member of the International Gaza Support Center, the US-led coordination body in Kiryat Gat that facilitates the delivery of medical aid to Gaza, leaving London in a position to know firsthand how much is getting through. A delegation of state senators and representatives from across the United States arrived in Israel and Samaria on Sunday, September 6, for a visit hosted by Samaria governor Yossi Dagan. The visit comes amid threats of sanctions and is part of an effort to advance legislation in US states recognizing Judea and Samaria. The delegation is headed by Jason Rapert, founder and president of the National Association of State Legislators, and includes elected officials from Alaska, Georgia, Arkansas, Mississippi, Oklahoma, Montana, Minnesota, Alabama, and Missouri.

The lawmakers visited the State’s Lookout in Peduel, which Dagan renamed in honor of President Donald Trump, where they viewed the Samaria region. They received a briefing on the Jewish communities in the area, its strategic and historical significance, and recent political developments in relations between Israel and the United States. In recent years, members of the delegation have promoted legislation recognizing Judea and Samaria, including measures requiring official documents in US states to use the term “Judea and Samaria” in place of the older designation.

During the tour, Minnesota State Senator Paul Utke announced that he would work to advance legislation strengthening recognition of Judea and Samaria in his state. “I would be very happy to do that. I have good friends in the legislature who will be part of this team. We will do everything we can,” he said. Some 1,370 Israeli physicians left the country for at least 12 months between 2023 and 2025, a new Tel Aviv University study found, giving Israel’s health system a clear picture of a challenge it must now confront. Over the three-year period, the number is nearly double the 705 physicians who relocated abroad between 2013 and 2015. The researchers recorded 416 departures in 2023, 530 in 2024, and an initial estimate of 419 in 2025.

The total number of departures over the three years exceeds the entire medical staff of major facilities such as Sha’arei Zedek Medical Center, Soroka Medical Center, or Shamir Medical Center. Even after accounting for Israeli physicians who returned home after time abroad, the net loss reached 509 doctors between 2023 and 2024 alone. That annual net loss of roughly 255 doctors is nearly five times the average net loss of 54 doctors per year recorded between 2010 and 2019.

The researchers stressed that a year spent abroad does not automatically mean permanent emigration, since many doctors travel for fellowships, research, or advanced training and are expected to return. Scientists at Ben-Gurion University in southern Israel have engineered a high-tech sponge made from plant fibers that can both mop up an oil spill and feed the bacteria that feast on oil and break it down, the university announced on Sunday, September 6. The usual methods for tackling oil spills are to skim and soak up the black mess or to wait for nature’s microscopic cleaners to digest it. Oil-eating bacteria, however, work slowly in open water because they lack essential nutrients such as nitrogen and phosphorus.

In the past, scientists tried dumping liquid fertilizers into oil-slicked waters to feed the bacteria. While that helped accelerate cleanup, the fertilizer quickly diluted into ocean currents, lost its effectiveness, and sometimes caused unintended environmental consequences, such as triggering massive algae blooms. The new research, led by Prof. Ariel Kushmaro and headed by Dr. Danit Lisa Karsagi Biron in the university’s Environmental Biotechnology Laboratory, combines physical strength with sped-up biology.

The team created a spongy material from cellulose fibers enriched with nutrients, then freeze-dried and baked it at high heat to produce a porous aerogel that acts like an ultra-light sponge. It repels water while locking onto petroleum compounds, and it can absorb roughly 100 times its own mass in crude oil or fuel in just seconds. Once the oil is trapped, the nutrients baked into the fibers give local oil-degrading bacteria a platform on which to colonize and consume the pollutants, turning a cleanup tool into a living cleanup crew.
