Israel Sends 80-Person Rescue Delegation to Earthquake-Stricken Colombia

Israel's aid delegation to Colombia, dubbed the “Alliance of Friends,” took off on Thursday night, August 13, to assist in the aftermath of the country's devastating earthquake, the Home Front Command announced. The delegation departed from the Nevatim Airbase and immediately began a rescue and assistance mission upon its arrival.

The 80-person delegation includes representatives from the IDF, the Ministry of Defense, and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. Home Front Command Maj.-Gen. Shai Klapper said the main goal of the expedition is to provide immediate life-saving assistance through the mapping of destruction sites. The delegation is headed by the commander of the Home Front Command's National Rescue Unit, Brig.-Gen. (res.) Yossi Pinto, and includes both regular-duty soldiers and reservists.

On Wednesday night, August 12, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that an aid delegation would be sent to Colombia, after Colombian President de la Espriella requested that Israel do so. The mission left Israel within a day of that request.
