Toronto Synagogue Attacked a Day After Montreal Arson

An object was hurled through the window of a Toronto synagogue on the night of Friday, June 5, the Toronto Police Service said — the second attack on a Canadian synagogue within 24 hours. A window of the Mishkan Avraham synagogue was shattered, though no one was injured, and an investigation was opened with no suspects identified.

Toronto’s Israeli Consul General, Idit Shamir, said the time for symbolic gestures had passed, with Canadian Jews left to wonder which Jewish institution would be targeted next. Synagogues were still being shot at and firebombs still thrown, she said, insisting that Canada must confront antisemitic violence “with the full force of the law.”

The attack came a day after an attempted arson at the Temple Emanu-El-Beth-Sholom synagogue in the Montreal area overnight on Thursday, June 4. The building was not significantly damaged and remained open for Shabbat. Officers quickly arrested a suspect, identified as a local resident facing six charges including arson and possession of an explosive device. Both incidents followed a week in which Prime Minister Mark Carney acknowledged that Canada’s civic compact was failing Jewish Canadians.

Father God, we pray for Jewish communities across Canada and throughout the diaspora who gather to worship under the shadow of hatred and threat. Surround synagogues, schools, and homes with Your protection, and let no scheme of violence against them succeed. We ask that You move the hearts of leaders and authorities to act with courage and justice, defending Your people in word and in deed. Comfort all who are afraid, and raise up neighbors and friends to stand beside them. In Yeshua’s Name we pray for safety and peace.
