Australia Says Tehran Behind Two Antisemitic Arson Attacks, Expels Iranian Ambassador

Australia Says Tehran Behind Two Antisemitic Arson Attacks, Expels Iranian Ambassador

Australia announced on Tuesday, August 26, 2025, that it is expelling Iran’s ambassador after intelligence services concluded Tehran directed at least two antisemitic arson attacks targeting a kosher deli in Sydney on October 20, 2024, and the Adass Israel Synagogue in Melbourne on December 6, 2024.

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the acts were “dangerous” attempts by a foreign state to undermine social cohesion, adding that Australian diplomats have been withdrawn from Tehran to a third country for safety. Canberra will also legislate to designate Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps as a terrorist organization, in what officials described as the first such ambassadorial expulsion by Australia since World War II.

Australian officials said the investigation by the Australian Security Intelligence Organization found the IRGC directed the operations using proxies, even as it assessed that embassy staff in Canberra were not directly involved. Community leaders welcomed the decision while expressing alarm that Jewish institutions had been targeted so deliberately. The Israeli embassy in Australia praised the move and said Iran’s regime threatens the broader free world, not just Jews and Israel.
