Israel Downgrades Ties With Brazil After Brasilia Refuses To Accept New Ambassador
Israel said Monday, August 26, 2025, it is lowering the level of relations with Brazil after months without formal approval for Ambassador-designate Gali Dagan.
The Foreign Ministry cited Brasilia’s failure to respond and a sustained “critical and hostile” posture toward Israel, noting the downturn followed Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva’s remarks last year that likened Israel’s actions in Gaza to genocide. Jerusalem declared Lula persona non grata at the time; Brazil had recalled its ambassador earlier and has not named a replacement.
With formal ties now handled at a lower diplomatic level, Israel emphasized its continued engagement with allies and Jewish communities in Brazil while leaving room for future recalibration should the political climate shift.
