Reports: Iran Crackdown among Deadliest in Modern Times; 36,000+ Dead, Hospital Executions, Stuffed Alive in Body Bags
A series of investigations described a merciless two-day crackdown in Iran that allegedly killed as many as 36,500 people, following orders to crush protests “by any means necessary.” Testimony collected by rights researchers and journalists includes accounts of wounded civilians removed from treatment and executed, and victims reportedly “stuffed alive” into body bags before being transported to morgues. Internal tallies cited by sources climbed from initial counts in the tens of thousands to more than 36,500 by late January.
The reports describe a near-total communications blackout as security forces deployed across hundreds of locations, replacing crowd-control measures with live fire. Medical workers recounted corridors overwhelmed with gunshot victims and scenes that left staff traumatized. The human toll, these accounts say, may still be undercounted due to concealment, pressure on families, and quiet burials during the blackout period.
As international pressure intensifies, Iranian officials continue to reject the high casualty estimates and blame foreign actors. The scale and speed of the killings, however, continue to spur comparisons to some of the deadliest short-term mass slaughters in modern records.
