UN Envoy Francesca Albanese Tells Germany to ‘Free Itself’ from Holocaust Guilt
Francesca Albanese, the UN special rapporteur on the Palestinian territories who is widely known for her hostility toward Israel, has drawn alarm after publishing a social media post that paired antisemitic rhetoric with a revision of Holocaust history. In the message, posted to her Facebook account, she urged the German people to absolve themselves of the burden of guilt and historical responsibility for the crimes of the Nazi regime. The post marked a sharp escalation of the rhetoric for which the envoy has become known.
She argued that modern Germany’s effort to atone for its past through steadfast support for Israel does not stem from sincere remorse, but from what she described as a “historical superiority syndrome” that has never been confronted. That support, she said, functions as a “convenient mask” worn to regain acceptance within the international community. Albanese did not stop at Germany, going on to disparage the Jewish people in terms that read as plainly antisemitic.
She further claimed that Germany does not respect Jews who are not Zionist and that it conducts itself as a “socially disturbed state” that enacts discriminatory laws, urging German citizens to free themselves of any obligation toward Israel. Her remarks combined a denial of Germany’s historical responsibility with open hostility toward both the Jewish people and the State of Israel.
