Sparkling Discovery: 1,400-Year-Old Gold Hoard Found at Sussita National Park
A team from the University of Haifa unearthed an exceptional Byzantine-era treasure at Sussita National Park overlooking the Sea of Galilee—97 gold coins alongside ornate jewelry fragments set with pearls and semi-precious stones. Scholars date the hoard to the early 7th century CE, suggesting it was hurriedly hidden during the Sasanian conquest; among the coins is a rare piece minted during the revolt that brought the emperor Heraclius to power.
Excavation leaders said the remarkable state of preservation and the combination of currency and fine adornments provide a vivid snapshot of the region’s economic and cultural life on the eve of dramatic geopolitical shifts. Heritage officials hope the public display of the find will deepen appreciation for the area’s diverse communities and the layers of history embedded in the landscape.
The discovery continues a series of major finds around the Galilee that illuminate the interplay of pagan, Christian, and Jewish communities during late antiquity. Conservation steps are underway, with plans to present the artifacts to the public after study and stabilization.
