The newly appointed Israeli Prime Minister Yair Lapid has agreed to meetings to renew talks with the Palestinians to create a “two-state solution.” The report cited a report published by the Egyptian Presidential Office quoting a phone conversation between Lapid and Egyptian President al-Sisi:

“It was agreed to work to organize bilateral and multilateral meetings that would include Israel, Egypt, and the head of the Palestinian Authority in the near future to re-energize the peace negotiations process,” the report read.

The Egyptian announcement stands in contrast to the benign statement by the Israeli government:

“The two leaders discussed bilateral and regional matters and emphasized the importance of the peace agreement between Egypt and Israel, which laid the foundation for the countries’ strategic relations and is a central pillar of regional stability,” the Israeli statement read. “The two expressed their commitment to continuing to develop relations, including in the economic sphere.”

“President El-Sisi reiterated that Egypt will continue its efforts to achieve just and comprehensive peace, based on the two-state solution and references of international legitimacy, opening up prospects for cooperation and development for all the peoples of the region.”

As Foreign Minister under Bennett, Lapid assured the Israeli public that while Bennett was PM, the two-state solution was off the table, and there would be no negotiations with the Palestinian Authority. One year ago, an address to the European Union described the two-state solution as “unfeasible.”

Lapid has opposed expanding or building Jewish communities “that will prevent the possibility of a future two-state solution.”

A two-state solution would create an unprecedented Palestinian state inside Israel’s borders that is ethnically cleansed of Jews, with its capital in Jerusalem. Even if the state is established with the Palestinian Authority in power, Hamas currently commands popular support and could take over as it did in Gaza. (i365/VFI News)

Australian Islamic studies academic Kylie Moore-Gilbert, who was held hostage by Iran for 804 days from 2018-2020, urged Western governments to advise their citizens not to travel to the Islamic Republic.

“Iran should be classified as DO NOT TRAVEL in Western govts' travel advice," she tweeted on Saturday, July 9. "If Iran wishes to negotiate a return of Western tourists and their valuable dollars and euros, they should agree to enforceable measures to protect and prevent their arrest.”

“Unfortunately, the many good people working in Iran's struggling tourism sector would be damaged by such a policy," Moore-Gilbert said. "Due to the regime's shocking behavior, however, I believe Western countries are left with no choice. “

Vladimir Putin will visit Iran next week, the Kremlin has said, just hours after the US warned he is trying to buy military drones from Tehran to use in Ukraine. 

The Russian leader will visit the Iranian capital on Tuesday for a meeting with Iran's leaders and Turkey's President Erdogan, ostensibly to hold talks on Syria.

But the situation in Ukraine - which sits across the Black Sea from Turkey - is almost certain to feature in discussions.

However, he rubbished suggestions that talks could lead to more negotiations with Ukraine, which Erdogan helped facilitate in the early days of the war.

Defense Minister Benny Gantz’s Blue and White party and Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar’s New Hope party have inked an agreement to run as a joint slate in the upcoming election, set for November 1, they announced on Sunday evening, July 10.

Decrying extremist elements, Gantz said at a press briefing that the two parties will set out to establish a “responsible, realistic, secure, and liberal” government. Such a coalition, he said, will “say no to racism, no to extremism, and yes to unity for all parts of the country and all types of citizens… ultra-Orthodox, Orthodox, secular; Muslims, Christians, Druse, and Jews.”

A number of Iranian women removed their hijabs in public on Tuesday in protest of increasing pressure by the Iranian government to enforce hijab and chastity laws, sharing videos with the hashtag #hijab_without_hijab on social media.

The protest came as the government marked "hijab and chastity day" on Tuesday, July 12, with measures including a chastity ceremony in a stadium in Tehran, and as the Iranian government makes hijab laws in the country stricter.

Earlier this month, the deputy prosecutor of the city of Mashhad in northeast Iran wrote an order preventing women not wearing hijab from entering the metro in the city and accessing offices and banks, with the mayor of the city expressing opposition to the decision but allowing the order, according to BBC Persian.

Meanwhile, Iran's Bank Mellat has issued a directive forbidding female employees from wearing high-heels and stockings. Male managers at the bank are also prohibited from having women as administrative assistants.

On Tuesday and on the days preceding it, Iranian women shared videos and photos of themselves removing their hijab in public throughout Iran on social media.

President Isaac Herzog and First Lady Michal Herzog were welcomed Tuesday morning, July 12, to the Czech Republic with a state welcoming ceremony and honor guard at Prague Castle in the Czech capital. The President and the First Lady were personally greeted by Czech President Miloš Zeman and First Lady Ivana Zemanová. During the ceremony, both nations' anthems were played and the presidents reviewed an honor guard.

After the ceremony, President Herzog and President Zeman conducted a tête-à-tête, after which they held an expanded bilateral meeting with the participation of both delegations.

Jerusalem’s Chords Bridge was lit up to show the Japanese flag alongside the Israeli flag on Sunday evening, July 10, as a sign of solidarity with the Japanese people following last week’s assassination of former prime minister Shinzo Abe.

“The city of Jerusalem sends its condolences to the Japanese people and mourns the death of a friend of Israel, a great leader of his people and the entire world,” Jerusalem Mayor Moshe Lion said in a statement.

Abe was shot from behind minutes after he started a speech in Nara in western Japan. He was airlifted to a hospital for emergency treatment but was not breathing and his heart had stopped. He was pronounced dead later at the hospital. (TOI / VFI News)

A month after Celsius Network, a cryptocurrency lending platform with millions of users and ties and offices in Israel, suspended all withdrawals in a move that sent a chill across the digital currency industry, the company filed for bankruptcy.

In its statement late Wednesday, July 13, Celsius, which suspended all withdrawals and transfers between accounts in mid-June, said it was seeking to restructure in a way that would maximize value for all stakeholders, and said it had $167 million of cash available to meet urgent needs in the meantime.

Without the freeze on withdrawals, “the acceleration … would have allowed certain customers — those who were first to act — to be paid in full while leaving others behind to wait,” the special committee of the Celsius board of directors was quoted in the statement as saying. (TOI / VFI News)
