Iran Executes Young Wrestler and Two Others Convicted Over January Protests
Iran executed three men on Thursday, March 19, after convicting them of involvement in the killing of two police officers during anti-government protests in January. The men—Mehdi Ghasemi, Saleh Mohammadi, and Saeed Davoudi—were hanged in the city of Qom after being found guilty of “waging war against God,” a capital offense under Iranian law known as moharebeh. Authorities accused them of carrying out actions in support of Israel and the United States.
Human rights organizations sharply condemned the executions, stating that the men had not received fair trials. The convictions were based on confessions allegedly obtained under torture, with no witness testimony or video evidence placing them at the scene. The defendants were also denied proper legal representation. Particular concern was raised over 19-year-old Mohammadi, who had competed in international wrestling tournaments and won a bronze medal at an event in Russia.
The hangings mark the first officially announced executions linked to the wave of nationwide protests that erupted in late December 2025 and intensified in January 2026. Rights organizations warned that the executions could signal an increase in the use of capital punishment, with dozens of detainees connected to the protests potentially at risk. Iran remains among the countries with the highest number of executions globally.

"Merciful Father, we grieve the unjust execution of these young men and ask You to comfort their families in this hour of sorrow. We cry out for the people of Iran who are suffering under a regime that silences dissent with death. In Yeshua’s Name, we pray that You expose injustice, restrain the hand of the oppressor, and bring about true freedom for the Iranian people. Let Your justice roll down like waters and righteousness like a mighty stream. We ask that You protect all those who are imprisoned and at risk, and that their courage will not be in vain."
