IDF Sources Warn War Could Leave Iran with More Radical, Nuclear-Ambitious Regime

Israeli military sources expressed concern on Thursday, March 19, that the war with Iran could ultimately result in an Islamic regime far more radical and nuclear-weapons-seeking than the one it replaced. The assessment came despite significant progress in degrading Iran’s military capabilities across virtually every domain, with combined Israeli and American strikes numbering more than 18,000.

IDF sources acknowledged that much of Iran’s military power has been set back by years, but said no one can predict whether the ongoing strikes will coax enough Iranian protesters into the streets to topple the regime. The military has invested extraordinary efforts in destroying IRGC, Basij, Interior Ministry, and Intelligence Ministry command centers—the backbone of the regime’s apparatus for suppressing opposition—and has even bombed smaller checkpoints that could be used to block demonstrators.

A nightmare scenario remains on the table: while most of Iran’s nuclear program has been severely damaged, its 60% enriched uranium at Isfahan and the fortified Pickaxe Mountain facility near Natanz have not been neutralized, and even mega bunker-busters cannot penetrate the latter. With Mojtaba Khamenei—widely viewed as more extreme than his father—now serving as supreme leader, a weakened but still nuclear-capable Iran represents a grave ongoing threat.
