Iran told the United States in talks that it was ready to accept some limits on its uranium enrichment but needed watertight guarantees US President Donald Trump would not again ditch a nuclear pact, a senior Iranian official said on Friday, April 18. 

He also vowed that Iran would never agree to dismantle its centrifuges for enriching uranium. Iran and the United States were set to hold a second round of talks on Saturday in Rome, a week after a first round of negotiations in Oman, which both sides described as positive.

Trump, meanwhile, reiterated Friday that he would not allow Iran to get nuclear weapons. “With Iran, they can’t have a nuclear weapon.”

“And if they have a nuclear weapon, you’ll all be very unhappy. You’ll all be very unhappy because your life will be in great danger,” Trump told reporters in the Oval Office before his event was drawn to an abrupt close when someone in the room had a medical issue.

Trump, who has restored a “maximum pressure” campaign on Tehran since February, ditched a 2015 nuclear pact between Iran and six world powers in 2018 during his first term and re-imposed crippling sanctions on Iran. (TOI/VFI News)

“Our Heavenly Father, we pray for the dismantlement of Iran's uranium centrifuges. We pray in Yeshua's Name that You do not permit it to carry on with its nuclear plans but that You will halt them before any harm is done in the Middle East and anywhere else in the world. We also pray that You strengthen worldwide leaders and guide them into making the best decisions regarding the Iranian nuclear matter.”

U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) Commander Gen. Michael Kurilla, seen as one of Israel’s staunchest allies in the American defense establishment, has reportedly become the leading voice within the U.S. military advocating for a joint strike with Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities, renowned American media reported on Saturday, April 19.

According to the report, internal U.S. discussions over recent months were divided into two camps: one led by Kurilla in favor of a joint military strike, and another advocating diplomacy to curb Iran’s nuclear ambitions. Ultimately, President Donald Trump sided with the latter, shelving Israel’s operational plans.

Netanyahu reportedly traveled to Washington in a last-ditch effort to convince Trump to greenlight the operation but failed. Israeli officials told the American news outlet that the IDF had developed a plan involving a combined air and commando strike but were not operationally ready before October. As a result, Israel pivoted toward planning a solo aerial assault, requiring U.S. support.

Kurilla and National Security Adviser Mike Waltz evaluated how the U.S. could assist, with the Pentagon deploying military assets to the region, including two aircraft carriers, Patriot and THAAD batteries and B-2 bombers — a move widely interpreted as preparation for a possible Israeli strike.

Israeli defense analysts say the window for a successful attack on Iran’s nuclear program is rapidly closing. According to Israeli and U.S. intelligence sources, the combination of Israel’s recent military gains in Gaza, domestic turmoil in Iran and the current geopolitical alignment offers a rare opportunity for an effective strike. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the citizens of Israel in a pre-recorded message on Saturday, April 19, shortly after Shabbat ended. The video came as Hamas published a third sign of life video of Israeli hostage Elkana Bohbot.

“I will not surrender to murderers. Such a surrender would endanger you, the public. If we yield to their demands, all the tremendous achievements we have gained will be lost,” Netanyahu said.

“Hamas has once again rejected a proposal to release half of the living hostages and many fallen soldiers. Hamas rejected the proposal and demanded an end to the war. If we accept Hamas’s demands, it would mean that Israel can be forced to surrender,” he continued. 

The prime minister reiterated that such capitulation would “endanger the country and endanger you.” 

Meanwhile, a group of families of soldiers who fell in the Swords of Iron War, previous wars, and terror attacks have also come out against the recent calls to refuse military service and end the war. A letter signed by over 1,000 bereaved families stresses that the war cannot end before all of its objectives are achieved including the return of the hostages, the elimination of the Hamas terror group, and a long-term plan ensuring that Gaza can no longer pose a threat to the State of Israel.

Hamas told Arab mediators last week that it is willing to enter a long-term truce with Israel during which it would halt all military operations, including the development of weapons and the digging of tunnels, two officials familiar with the matter told Israeli media on Sunday, April 20. 

The truce would be part of a comprehensive deal that the terror group is seeking to end the Gaza war sparked by its October 7, 2023, onslaught, a senior Palestinian official and a diplomat from an Arab mediating country said. 

Hamas is also willing to cede governing control of Gaza to an independent body of Palestinian technocrats, as envisioned by an Egyptian proposal for the postwar administration of the Strip, the officials said. 

To enforce the halt on military activities against Israel, some Hamas officials have indicated willingness to have all of the group’s weapons placed in a guarded warehouse, according to the Arab diplomat. 

As for the length of the truce, Hamas is willing for it to last five, 10 or even 15 years, the Palestinian official said. The idea goes further than Hamas has been willing to go in the past but still falls well short of the full disarmament that Israel is demanding, and is accordingly a nonstarter. (TOI/VFI News)

Hamas’s military wing, the Izz ad-Din al-Qassam Brigades, has recruited around 30,000 young people from Gaza to join their ranks, according to a Sunday report, on April 20. A Saudi channel, citing Palestinian sources, said in its report that most of the recruits had previously undergone training in secret military camps run by the wing. 

The report did not clarify if the training camps were still being held during the war, or if they only took place beforehand. However, the new recruits reportedly lack military skills beyond “guerrilla warfare,” rocket fire, and planting explosives.

Further, the report did not mention an exact timeframe for when they were recruited but is likely referring to a recent period in the ongoing war, which resumed last month following the collapse of the ceasefire-hostage release agreement that was signed in January.

Gaza’s civil defense agency reported that Israeli airstrikes on Sunday killed at least 25 people across the Gaza Strip, including women and children. In a separate statement later, the agency reported that five people were killed in an Israeli drone strike on a group of civilians in eastern Rafah. The figures could not be independently verified and do not differentiate between combatants and civilians. 

Meanwhile, aid groups have recently claimed that thousands of children have become malnourished and most people are barely eating one meal a day as stocks dwindle, according to the United Nations. (TOI/VFI News)

The IDF on Sunday, April 20, announced the dismissal of the deputy commander of the Golani Brigade’s reconnaissance unit over an incident on March 23 in which his forces opened fire on a convoy of ambulances and emergency vehicles in southern Gaza’s Rafah, killing 15 rescue workers.

The commander was also being removed from his role for his “partial and inaccurate” report of the incident during a preliminary investigation, the military said. 

Additionally, the IDF said the commander of the 14th Reserve Armored Brigade — the unit leading the operation in Rafah when the killing of the medics took place — was being formally censured for his “overall responsibility for the incident,” including the management of the scene afterwards. 

The moves, decided by the chief of the Southern Command, Maj. Gen. Yaniv Asor, and approved by IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Eyal Zamir, came following an investigation into the incident led by Maj. Gen. (res.) Yoav Har-Even, head of the General Staff Fact-Finding Assessment Mechanism, an independent military body responsible for investigating unusual incidents during the war.

Har-Even’s investigation found that there were no violations of the IDF’s code of ethics during the incident, but there were several “professional errors” and actions by troops that breached military protocol, alongside a failure to fully report the incident. (TOI/VFI News)

A new Geocartography poll has revealed that the vast majority - 93% - of Jewish Israelis oppose the employment of Palestinian Authority (PA) Arabs in the Israeli construction industry. The poll revealed that just 3.6% of Israelis declared that they trust Palestinian Authority Arab workers to work in Israel in the future. 

Among Arab Israelis, 44% expressed a lack of trust in PA Arabs who work in Israel. Alongside the desire not to employ PA Arabs, there is widespread support for bringing in foreign workers to replace them.

83% of respondents expressed support for bringing foreign workers to work in the construction industry, and 91% do not trust PA Arabs; 92% believe that bringing foreign workers will help stabilize and improve the industry. 

The data revealed that among religious and haredi respondents, there is especially high support (91%) for banning PA Arabs from working in the field, versus 78% of secular respondents. A full 79% of religious and haredi respondents support employing foreign workers, compared to 75% of traditional respondents and 62% of secular respondents. 

Analysis of the results revealed that most of those who support employing foreign workers live in the center (76%) and the Sharon region (71%). Large percentages also live in the north (68%), Jerusalem (67%), and south (65%). (INN/VFI News)

Iran is reportedly building a major spaceport as part of an effort to maintain its regional status following major blows to its proxies across the Middle East. American media detailed the Islamic Republic’s plans to build the facility, likened to Florida’s Cape Canaveral, in Chabahar, a launch site close to the equator, making it more efficient for launches.

The site, which was supposed to open last year, will contain a 54-square-mile complex, allowing Iran to launch powerful spacecraft into orbit, the report said on Friday, April 18. The program has reportedly raised concerns among Western nations — particularly the US and Israel — that Iranian space technology could be used to advance the country’s intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) capabilities.

“Iran’s work on space-launch vehicles — including its two-stage, liquid-fueled Simorgh satellite carrier rocket — likely shortens the timeline to produce an ICBM due to the similarities in technology,” Gen. Anthony Cotton, commander of US Strategic Command, told the Senate Armed Services Committee last month.

One of the program’s reported aims is to send to space 20 internet satellites named after Qassem Soleimani, the IRGC Quds Force commander killed by a US drone in 2020. With more satellites, Iran could better guide its long-range weapons, according to the report. 

The report did not provide precise figures regarding the costs of the program, though a senior Iranian official reportedly said last November that approximately $11 million would be provided to Iran’s space agency, despite the sanctions that have crippled the Iranian economy. (TOI/VFI News)
