Israeli intelligence officials uncovered a planned Iranian assassination plot against Yair Netanyahu, the son of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, with a US official confirming that the operation was to be carried out on American soil. The plot targeted the younger Netanyahu in Florida, where he was living in Hallandale Beach, near Miami. Israeli intelligence exposed the scheme in December 2025.

Trump’s assessment followed remarks a day earlier from US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, who said on Sunday, August 23, that Washington is approaching the "endgame" in its confrontation with Iran, following what he described as the destruction of much of Tehran’s military capabilities. Outgoing Mossad chief David (Dedi) Barnea called on Thursday evening, August 27, for intensifying economic, diplomatic, and operational measures against the Iranian regime until it falls. Barnea delivered the remarks during a ceremony at Jerusalem City Hall, where Mayor Moshe Lion presented him with an award of recognition on behalf of the City Council and the residents of the capital.

Addressing policy toward Tehran, Barnea stressed that the sanctions imposed on Iran are not the end of the road. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the family of Sgt. First Class Yehuda Yekutiel Katz on Wednesday, August 26, offering his condolences following the fallen soldier’s burial, the Prime Minister’s Office announced. Netanyahu told the family that he was "deeply moved" by the return of Katz’s remains to Israel, and expressed sorrow that Katz’s parents passed away before their son was brought home.

The family spoke with the Prime Minister about Katz’s character, describing him as "a Torah scholar, a man of values, and a professional and devoted fighter." Their meeting came in the days after the soldier’s long-awaited burial, held after the IDF recovered Katz’s remains in an operation in Lebanon during the week of August 17.

Katz went missing 44 years earlier during the First Lebanon War, in the Battle of Sultan Yacoub on June 11, 1982. Two other soldiers were declared missing in the same battle, and their bodies were recovered in 2019 and in 2025. The wreck of the ship Altalena has been located intact on the Mediterranean seabed, 78 years after its sinking, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir and the Heritage Ministry announced on Monday, August 24. The Heritage Ministry said the ship was found at a depth of 503 meters, some 20 kilometers off Israel's coast.
